Running a Half

I officially started training this past week for a half marathon in April. This race will be my first half. It seems funny to me that I’ve run 2 marathons, but have not even registered for a half before. When I decided to run to raise money for TeamFox I decided that running a full marathon would help me raise more money than running a half. I thought many people would be happy to donate in order to see me kill myself over the full 26.2 miles. Why wouldn’t they? I wasn’t a runner so it might be kind of funny.

This year I’ve decided to branch out from my one marathon a year and a few 5K/10K races past 2 year routine. This year I am going to run at least 9 races with New York Road Runners (NYRR) so that I can qualify for the 2013 NYC Marathon. I plan to finish all 9 races before the end of June so that I can focus on weekends with my family in the summer and also on my 2012 marathon training. I’ve already finished one race in January and I’m registered for 2 more in March/April. That makes 6 more to go.

I checked out upcoming races on the NYRR website yesterday and I was thrilled to see that most of their races are on Sunday mornings. That will allow me to run races while still attending my girls’ baseball, lacrosse or soccer games. With both of them now into the full blown sports schedule, our Saturdays will be even busier than last year. (And yes, I am the crazy mom on the sidelines cheering for her daughter’s team just a tad too loudly.)

I will admit that I’m a little nervous about fitting in all these races plus marathon (and triathlon) training. I have no idea how this is going to go, but I figure if I create a race and training schedule and then just take it one day at a time I’ll figure it out somehow. It should be an interesting year!

wow good for you Karen. I just started running, so being able to run 100 miles in a little more than a month was a lot for me! Way to go!!

Good for you, Karen! I think you’ll really like the half marathon race. It’s nice to run a race that’s long but not insanely long like a marathon. Can’t wait to read more about your training!

Very cool! I’ve got a 10k I’m training for in March. But after that, I’m seriously considering to start training for a half. So I’ll be curious to see how yours goes and how different the training is from a full marathon.

      Hey Nanu!

Definitely let me know how the 10K goes. Would you like to write a guest post? I’d love to share your view of the running experience!

Nice Karen! Half marathon is my favorite distance to really race. It is a distance I can pace myself well and recover from quickly. :)

I just noticed in your previous post, which I can’t comment on for some reason, that you are planning on doing your first tri. Congrats! Have you picked on out yet? Have you started swimming and biking?
