For Christmas I got several books on running plus several people got me running clothes. My how times have changed! I guess I’m officially a runner to many people. The funny thing is that I think the running related presents were some of my favorites. I don’t have a ton of running gear so the new clothes are awesome and the books are perfect.
I just finished the first of the new books, The Long Run by Matt Long, and I loved it. In case you haven’t heard of this book the basic story is that Matt was a NYC fireman, an amazing marathoner (he qualified for Boston) and an Ironman. Then he got run over by a bus, literally! Doctors gave him a 5% chance to live and thought he’d never walk again without a cane and running was just a fairy tale.
The Long Run is Matt’s story about going from being an Ironman to having to learn to stand on his own again to becoming an Ironman again. His recovery is long and difficult and shows how much life is about your mental strength. Obviously he had a ton of physical problems he had to work through, but you can see how ultimately it is his mental strength that allows him to set and reach some pretty outrageous goals.
I can’t do this book justice in a simple blog post, but suffice it to say that the last few pages about his attempting the Lake Placid Ironman competition made me cry. I could feel the pain he must have felt and how difficult it must have been to take each step. I could also feel the pride he must have felt when he crossed that finish line again. (Don’t worry I didn’t spoil anything. You know from the outset that he completes another Ironman after being hit by the bus.)
If you want to read a book that will inspire you to go beyond what you or anyone else thinks is possible then read this book! It won’t disappoint.
